Join the Makulu II As It Sets Sail for Adventures Around the World

Headed by Heather Halstead, Reach the World is a non-profit organization founded to develop interactive, expedition-based educational resources on the Internet for students and teachers. Since the launch of Reach the World flagship expedition, the 1997-1999 circumnavigation of the school-ship Makulu II, more than 50 public school classrooms in seven states have worked to design curriculum projects in all academic disciplines related to the expedition. In addition to providing online content, Reach the World offers its collaborating classrooms support and professional development linked to each expedition.

In November 2001, the school-ship Makulu II set sail from New York City on her world circumnavigation. For the next two years, the five crew members will bring six oceans and more than 30 ports-of-call vividly to life on the Internet! Makula will journey from NYC to the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, across the Pacific Ocean, through Indonesia and across the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. In the fall semester of 2003, the voyage will conclude with passages to West Africa and across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean, before heading north to NYC once again.

Currently, Makulu II is in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. To find out where the course is heading, visit www.reachtheworld.org, where you can read the weekly ship’s log, meet the crew and participate in curriculum projects related to the voyage.#
