On July 30, 1619, the first American representative assembly met in Jamestown, Virginia.

In 1964 (on July 2), President Lyndon Johnson signed into law the 1964 Civil Rights Act

In 1971 (on July 1), the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, giving 18 year olds the right to vote.

Our Bloodiest War (The Civil War):

In 1863 (on July 3),Vicksburg, Mississippi surrendered to the Union.

On July 1,1863, in Pennsylvania, the battle of Gettysburg began and lasted through July 3. Some 4,000 Confederate and 3,000 Union troops lost their lives.

World History:

In 1789 (on July 14), French citizens stormed the Bastille—a fortress prison—marking the beginning of the French Revolution.
