New Hunter College President Visits Former School

Jennifer Raab, the newly installed president of Hunter College, made a nostalgic visit to P.S. 173, her former elementary school in Washington Heights. Raab addressed about 180 graduating fifth-graders who are getting ready to attend neighborhood intermediate schools next fall. About half a dozen students have been accepted at Mott Hall, a public school for the gifted on the campus of City College in Manhattan.

Raab grew up in Washington Heights, next door to P.S. 173, and graduated from the school as Valedictorian in 1968. (At that time, the school extended through 6th grade.) Her sister and brother also attended the school, and her mother served for 18 years as a paraprofessional in the reading program there. Three other professionals from Raab’s years there still work at the school: teacher Jeanette Chiappe and early-childhood teaching assistants Sally Williams and Doris Silverstein. #
