As
we start a new year in an uncertain economy and world, it is an
appropriate time to contemplate another past time of uncertainty
such as the Depression. Let Us Now Praise Famous Men by
James Agee and Walker Evans is a very moving meditation on poverty
through the haunting black and white photographs of Walker Evans
of Alabama sharecropper families, children and lodgings in 1936;
and the emotional, poignant stream of consciousness narrative
about these people, detailed descriptions of their clothing and
lodging and related musings of James Agee. These sharecroppers
appear to be trapped in poverty with decrepit housing, minimal
income, limited education and considerable expenses to pay their
landlords.
As bleak as things were for those people in Let Us Now Praise
Famous Men then, there is much hope for many people of similar
limited means, today, as Millard Fuller, President and CEO of
Habitat For Humanity International recounts in More Than Houses,
a collection of personal testimonies of gratitude from the
new homeowners who built their own home along with Habitat volunteers,
as well as reports about several Habitat programs around the world.
In this book, one will read of true stories of children who were
poor students in school, who became good students after moving
into their new Habitat home.
One of many stories of joy is that of Rosie Simmons of Chicago,
who was featured in the November 1997 issue of Ebony magazine.
She lived in a miserable apartment in the uptown section. She
received a Habitat house, and her life improved. She got a bank
job in downtown Chicago and was promoted four times in four years
and holds a very responsible job there. There are many more stories
of hope in this book. Happy New Year!
