Ask Dr. Rosen
A new column answering parents’, educators’ and students’ questions about special education, in response to the flood of letters and e-mails we have been receiving at Education Update.

Dear Dr. Rosen:

I am a counselor in Sandy Creek New York (upstate) and I am trying to help one of my seniors who has CP. He is interested in finding scholarships for people with Cerebral Palsy, and I don’t know where to tell him to look. Do you have any information?

Danielle James, High School Guidance Counselor, Sandy Creek, New York

Dear Danielle:

While I do not know of any scholarships specifically for persons with Cerebral Palsy, it would be worth checking with some organizations for people with CP. One such organization is United Cerebral Palsy of New York, 330 W 34th Street, New York, NY 10001, 212-947-5770, www.cerebralpalsynys.org.

The Yes I Can! Foundation awards scholarships for persons with disabilities who are entering post-secondary education for the first time in their lives. You can write the Yes I Can! Foundation at 1110 North Glebe Road, Suite 300, Arlington, VA 22201.

The Chairscholars Foundation grants scholarships to physically challenged college-bound students. The contact person for the New York Chapter of the Chairscholars Foundation is Andrew Fox. You can write him at Club Planet, 485 Madison Avenue, 2nd floor, New York, NY 10002, or e-mail Andrew@way.com. For more information, you can also visit the Chairscholars’ website at www.chairscholars.org.

The following organizations might also be of help: The George Washington University HEATH Resource Center, National Clearinghouse on Postsecondary Education for Individuals with Disabilities
