Book Reviews
By Selene Vasquez

September is back-to-school month with a renewed passion for learning. Discover new wonders in this delightful array of books.

PICTURE BOOKS: AGES 5 THRU 8

Reminiscent of a cumulative folk tale, a girl with a stubborn case of hiccups tries one zany remedy after another. A story time favorite appealing to the sense of the ridiculous.

FICTION: AGES 9 THRU 12

A manic, science-fiction delight. Devin and his friend Stan attempt to save Earth’s tourist trade by traveling back to ancient Egypt! The gross-out jokes and gags will satiate even the wildest of temperaments.

NON-FICTION: AGES 9 THRU 12

The mass extinction of dinosaurs some sixty-five million years ago is certainly enough to arouse any kid’s interest. Coupled with dramatic paintings, this recreation of an apocalypse is an unforgettable lesson in Earth’s history.

POETRY: AGES 5 THRU 8

Feast upon poems with spectacular quilted and appliqued piece works. Dazzling in colors and patterns, this lovely book offers a unique combination of exquisite cloth art and the beauty of the written word.

Selene S. Vasquez is a media specialist at Orange Brook Elementary in Hollywood, Florida. She was formerly a children’s librarian for the New York Public Library.
