Firsts

In 1879 (on Oct. 19) Thomas Edison gave his first successful demonstration of electric light.
In 1908 (on Oct. 1) the first Ford Model T rolled off an assembly line.
In 1957 (on Oct. 4) the Soviet Union launched Sputnik - the first man made satellite.
In 1958 (on Oct 26) on the first day of daily jet service, a Pan Am plane with 111 passengers flew from New York to Paris.

World History

In 1492 (on Oct.12) Christopher Columbus landed in San Salvador in the Bahamas.
In 1517 (on Oct. 31), Martin Luther openly assailed Catholic Chuch leadership and practices, inagurating the Protestant Reformation.
On October. 1, 1946, eleven top Nazis were sentenced to death by an international military tribunal in Nuremberg.
On October. 1, 1949, Communist leaders announced establishment of the People’s Republic of China.

American History

In 1636 (on Oct. 28) Harvard College was founded.
In 1781 (on Oct 19) British troops surrendered at Yorktown, ending the Revolutionary War.
In 1929 (on Oct. 29) the stock market crashed, marking the beginning of the Great Depression.
In 1962 (on Oct. 28) the Soviet Union agreed to U.S. demands to remove balistic missiles from Cuba, ending the Cuban Missile Crisis.
