School of Music & Art Receives Grant

The Alumni & Friends of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts has received a five-year, $1.125 million grant under the Talented Students in the Arts Initiative (TSAI), a new collaboration of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Surdna Foundation.

The grant benefits LaGuardia High School and will be used to support student internships and apprenticeships, provide student scholarships for summer and after-school programs, engage guest artists and master teachers, and foster professional development programs for faculty. At the end of the five-year grant period, the school is expected to support these programs on an ongoing basis.

The grant includes $375,000 in artistic program support from the Surdna Foundation, a national family foundation established in 1917 that, among other things, aims to improve the artistic capabilities of teens, and $750,000 in endowment support, which must be matched on a one-to-one basis, from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, established in 1996 to improve the quality of people’s lives by nurturing the arts. Both foundations are based in New York City.

“The TSAI grant will provide wonderful new opportunities for an enhanced educational experience at LaGuardia,” says Constance Boykan, executive director of the Alumni & Friends of LaGuardia.

The Alumni & Friends was founded in 1984 to assist the school. The 35,000 alumni, spanning over sixty years of graduation classes, include many of America’s leading visual and performing artists.

Through TSAI, more than $16 million over five years will go to support the performing arts programs and endowments of leading national arts training institutions and public performing arts high schools across the country.
