Freddy
Goes to Florida
by Walter
R. Brooks,
illustrated by Kurt Wiese
Overlook Press, $23.95
One
of my favorite television shows from my childhood was Mr. Ed,
about a talking horse based on a short story called ‘Ed takes
the Pledge’ written by Walter R. Brooks. At that time, some of
my favorite stories were part of a series of books about a pig
called Freddy, and his barnyard animal friends, also written by
Walter R. Brooks.
Years passed, I remembered some of the stories, forgot who the
author was and found no one who remembered reading about a talking
pig named Freddy. Out of the blue, in the last few years, wonderful
reprints of the Freddy stories, with the original illustrations
of Kurt Wiese, have appeared courtesy of the Overlook Press.
Apparently, from 1927 to 1958 Brooks wrote 26 books about Freddy
and his friends. The first one, To and Again, published in 1927,
reissued with then new illustrations by Kurt Wiese in 1949 as
Freddy Goes to Florida, introduces the reader to some marvelous
characters: Jinx, the cat, Mrs. Wiggins, the cow, Charles, the
rooster, Henrietta, the hen, Hank, the horse, and Freddy, the
pig, among others. From deciding to migrate to Florida for the
winter, saving a dog from a cruel owner, discovering gold, rescuing
Mrs. Wiggins and Hank from animal thieves, to pranks such as Freddy’s
pushing a doll carriage down the hill with Jinx inside, these
animals keep readers well entertained. Wiese’s vivid, black and
white illustrations convey well the actions and subtly the emotions
of these characters.
