Know Your Diabetes Facts

Diabetes has no cure but can be controlled. It is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, affecting people of all ages and ethnic groups. Diabetes is caused by a deficiency of insulin, a hormone that converts sugar and other food into energy. Risk factors include obesity, a family history of diabetes, old age, and altered glucose tolerance. Symptoms include extreme thirst or hunger, excessive urination, unexplained weight loss, sudden vision change, tingling or numbness in hands or feet, constant tiredness, dry skin, slow-healing sores, and high incidence of infections.

Complications include blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, and lower limb amputation. Diabetes treatment includes diet to control blood sugar, getting regular physical activity, taking medication and/or insulin, and monitoring blood sugar levels. Keeping blood sugar levels in the normal range lowers the risk of long-term complications. In the short run, it helps diabetics feel better and enjoy a better quality of life. #
