Lilies, Rabbits, and Painted Eggs, by Edna Barth, illustrated by Ursula Arndt (Clarion Books, $7.95)

The Face Of Truth, by William Edgar (P&R Publishing, $10.99)

It is April; it is springtime; it is the Easter season. Lilies, Rabbits and Painted Eggs, by Edna Barth, with pleasing, thematic illustrations by Ursula Arndt, is a wonderful, straightforward account of the history and traditions of the Easter symbols for children. There are chapters about the Easter season and the relationship of chickens, fireworks, rabbits, lambs, flowers, plants, eggs and hot cross buns, among other topics. At the beginning and the end of the book are instructions for making blown and tissue paper eggs and eggheads, as well as recipe suggestions for eggs and Chicken and Egg Yolks (Jokes) good for some chuckles.

For teenagers and adults, the Easter season is a good time to consider for themselves the importance of the Gospel, God, Jesus and the Resurrection and their own beliefs. The Face Of Truth by William Edgar will challenge readers to come to terms with their own beliefs and pursue answers to their questions about life through evaluating their culture, the society they live in and the Bible. Edgar achieves this by engaging readers with their culture with references to the Impressionists, Camus, the Scopes Trial, Woody Allen, Galileo and reality television shows such as ‘Real World’ and ‘Big Brother.’ Alongside this, Edgar presents Jesus as shown in the biblical accounts of Jesus giving sight to the blind man, and raising Lazarus from the dead. Edgar discusses the Trinity, and the nature of scripture. His great achievement with this book is his clarity of expression and his engaging writing style that makes his subject matter fascinating to his readers. Happy Easter!
