Funding for Arts Education

The Center for Arts Education (CAE) has received a $12 million grant from the Annenberg Foundation and a $2.5 million commitment from the New York City Board of Education to extend the restoration of the arts in the City’s public schools.

The two grants form the nucleus of CAE’s new five-year, $21.5 million campaign to bring arts education to all children in City schools. The campaign will identify and disseminate model programs, expand internship and professional development programs, foster parental involvement and promote school partnerships with business and cultural organizations.

The Annenberg Foundations original $12 million grant in 1996 has been matched over the last five years with an additional $24 million in public and private funds. “The City now commits $75 million per year to Project ARTS so arts teachers can be hired and arts organizations can work hand-in-hand with our public schools,” said Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. “The Center’s program has become a catalyst for restoring arts education throughout the entire public school system.”

“The restoration of the arts through Project ARTS would not have been possible without the Center’s work,” said Chancellor Harold Levy who announced the Board of Education’s $2.5 million commitment over the next five years that will “assist it [CAE] in identifying and supporting exemplary arts education initiatives from within our schools and share them with others in the system.”

CAE will implement six key programs, including Parents as Arts Partners Grants for approximately 500 schools to support family arts programs.
