Museums: Our Fathers, Our Grandfathers, Our Heroes
The Navajo Codetalkers of World War II at Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center

The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County proudly announces this amazing exhibit to be on view to the public from November 14, 2011 thru December 31, 2011. “This exhibit traces the story of the famed United States Marine Corps Navajo Code Talkers.  It begins with the original pilot group of first twenty-nine volunteers, who in 1942, developed and tested the original Navajo code.  Proven fast and accurate, the Marine Corps recruited nearly 400 more Navajos who utilized the code sending and receiving encrypted messages throughout the Pacific island hopping campaign.  The ingenuity of the Navajo Code Talkers baffled Japanese cryptographers and greatly helped in the effort to win the war in the Pacific.” (Circle of Light Navajo Educational Project brochure)

The Center is open Mon-Fri from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM and Sat-Sun from 12 Noon to 4:00 PM. Suggested donation: $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for students and seniors (65+). Docent-led tours are available at no additional charge. The Center is located on the Welwyn Preserve at 100 Crescent Beach Road in Glen Cove. For information and directions call 516 571-8040 or see our website at www.holocaust-nassau.org.
