Women Physicians Honored in New Web Site

A new Web site from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) promises to become an invaluable resource for students, educators and anyone else with an interest in medical history.

The Web site accompanies an NLM exhibition titled "Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America's Women Physicians," which opens this week at the Bethesda, Md., library. Visitors to www.nlm.nih.gov/changingthefaceofmedicine can play interactive games, download lesson plans and search for biographies of featured women physicians around the country.

"The exhibit shows women physicians through history, making independent and daring decisionsÐfounding institutions and winning Nobel prizes," says Dr. Ellen More, professor of history of medicine and medical humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and visiting curator for the project.

More is author of Restoring the Balance: Women Physicians and the Profession of Medicine, 1850-1995 (Harvard, 1999). The book has just been awarded the 2003 History of Science Society's women in science book prize. The NLM exhibit will run for 18 months before touring the nation, while the Web siteÑthe most comprehensive of its kindÑwill be updated and maintained for posterity.#
