The Six Fundamentals Of Success: The Rules For Getting It Right For Yourself & Your Organization
by Stuart R. Levine (Doubleday, $19.95)

In the later stages of winter as one may become more tired of the daily routine at work and somewhat unmotivated in purpose and direction, a great book for a wonderful pick me up in the workplace is The Six Fundamentals Of Success: The Rules For Getting It Right For Yourself And Your Organization by Stuart R. Levine, former CEO of Dale Carnegie and Associates, as well as a former New York State Assemblyman, and currently Chairman and CEO of Stuart Levine & Associates LLC, an international consulting and leadership training company.

Levine pinpoints six important fundamentals: 1. Make sure you add value, 2. Communicate up and down, inside and out, 3. Know how to deliver results, 4. Conduct yourself and your business with integrity. 5. Invest in relationships, 6. Gain perspective. For Make sure you have value, some key concepts he presents are: See your customer as a person, know your industry, work with a sense of urgency, make yourself promotable, do what matters most first, complete one important thing every day, timing is everything, act like an owner and stop financial hemorrhaging, among others.

Important ideas among many covered in Communicate up and down, inside and out are: establish a rhythm, respond to calls and e-mails within twenty-four hours, and excel at giving feedback. Know how to deliver results includes the following topics: Data is not knowledge, Overcome the kings and queens of chaos, The budget is your friend, Master financial reports, and The power of nice. Conduct yourself and your business with integrity suggests the following: respect yourself, always act ethically, and that the world doesn’t owe you a living. Some of Invest in relationships important points are: coach your team all day long, recognize the doers, satisfied employees equals loyal customers equals bigger profits, and no one is irreplaceable. As for Gain perspective, this section should be carefully read and reread, especially the subsections titled Know what you want, Setbacks make you stronger, Admit your limitations, Know when to take a deep breath and Make room for all parts of your life.

Reading The Six Fundamentals Of Success is uplifting and helpful for one’s processes of creative thinking not only for the subjects covered, but also for how these ideas are presented to the reader in such a well-organized manner through a clear, simple and direct writing style.

The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead
(Anchor Books, $12.95)

In the area of fiction, one of the best novels I have read in years is The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead. Set in a New York City of the past, present and possibly future, this story about elevators, empiricism, intuitionism and what happens to Lila Mae Watson, the city’s first black female inspector, when an elevator she has inspected crashes, grabs the reader’s attention and brings the reader into a world as alive and fascinating as the worlds of Jack Finney’s Time And Again and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man. The Intuitionist is just the book to read to combat the tedium of late winter. All books reviewed in this column are available for purchase at the store. Do come for these books, cards and gift items for St. Patrick’s Day, Lent, Passover, and Easter as well as materials on subjects related to those matters covered in the Passion film from Mel Gibson.
