President Richard Cook and Hundred Year Association Grant Awards
The Hundred Year Association of New York today granted its top KeySpan Corporation Charles E. Inniss College Scholarship for sons and daughters of career New York City employees to Jessica Hernandez, a junior at New York University. The Association's top Isaac Liberman Public Service Award for Career New York City employees went to Juan Fernandez, director of immigrant and employment rights for the New York City Commission on Human Rights.
Jessica Hernandez was diagnosed with cancer in August 2000. She entered New York University in January 2001 and she subsequently went into remission. Currently a third year student with an A average and a 3.8 GPA, she has been accepted by Mt. Sinai Medical School. Jessica comes from Brooklyn.
Jessica's mother is a sergeant with the New York City Police Department.
Juan Fernandez, Director of Immigrant Employment Rights and a researcher with the New York City Commission on Human Rights for 16 years, has held dozens of workshops for immigrant workers, employers and immigrant advocacy organizations. Juan and his staff inform the city's newest New Yorkers about employment rights and responsibilities under federal, state and city laws. Juan is the Commission's representative to the U. S. Department of Justice. He serves as the agency's chief spokesperson on immigrant related matters and regularly provides press interviews on immigrant matters.
Corey Baker is the Education Update/Hotel Wales College Scholar. Enrolled at Swarthmore College, Baker fosters the love for singing and dancing. He has a career interest in Social Services. He is the recipient of the George Gershwin Medal for Outstanding Scholastic Achievement-1999, A Better Chance Scholarship and Wadleigh Scholars Program among others. Dr. Pola Rosen, Publisher of Education Update and Mr. Andrew Labetti, Manager of the Wales Hotel presented the award.
David Kunstler, Wildlife Manager, Department of Parks and Recreation is credited with uncovering a new nesting ground of young cattle egrets on Huckleberry Island near New Rochelle. Ms. Lucretia Mali, of Henry W.T.Mali Company presented the award.

"The recipients of these awards are outstanding people," said Richard A. Cook, president of The Hundred Year Association. "They are but a few of many and we hope that by shining our light on them the public will see an uplifting and positive side of city government."
The Hundred Year Association of New York, founded in 1927, is comprised of corporations, for profit and not-for-profit, over 100 years old. The Association has distributed more than $1,000,000 during the past 45 years to outstanding career New York City civil service employees who have distinguished themselves consistently in city government; and college scholarships to sons and daughters of city employees who excel academically and who have demonstrated a record of community service.#
