Ribbon-Cutting at New Dr. Charlotte K. Frank Math Center at CCNY
by Joanna R. Leefer
Math supervisors from school districts around New York City were joined by education notables Dean Alfred Posamentier, President Gregory Williams, Deputy Chancellor Diana Lam, President of MacMillan Sari Factor and President of McGraw-Hill Education Henry Hirschberg, to pay homage to a great educator and benefactor, Dr. Charlotte K. Frank. Educated at City College at 137th Street and Convent Avenue. Dr. Frank, the daughter of immigrants, recalled the halcyon days when City College was a mecca for a free education, allowing young people to realize their dreams. "Now, it's time to give back," Frank emphasized. Her $100,000 gift of personal funds has been utilized for the creation of the new, state-of-the-art Dr. Charlotte K. Frank Math Center.
"This is a great day for us and for the college." stated CCNY's President Gregory Williams. "Thanks to Dr. Frank's generosity and heart felt commitment to math education, we can now offer a partnership to all sectors of the education community."
The new Math Center is a wealth of new cutting edge teaching materials that make math more accessible and fun. Some of the new equipment includes an overhead projector for training purposes, floor to ceiling shelves stacked with boxes of colorful geometric shapes, and a large wall mounted SMART Board, a touch-sensitive surface used to illustrate complex math applications, record notes, and highlight important information.
The Math Center will be used as a resource where instructors can obtain materials for teaching NYC public middle and high school students. The center will also be used as a training ground for new math teachers and for ongoing conferences.
Dr. Frank, who spent many years teaching, writing curriculum and serving as a regent for New York State, currently is a senior vice president at McGraw-Hill Publishing. The kudos and applause from colleagues justly honored Dr. Frank's valuable contributions to the college, to math educators throughout the city and most important, to the children of New York City.#
