Match Day at NYU Med
Students at NYU School of Medicine had their share of excitement
recently, when all medical school graduates across the U.S.
learned where they would perform their residencies. Anxiety
was immediately followed by relief at Alumni Hall, as 166 students
simultaneously opened their envelopes to find out where they
were matched.
About 59 percent of the graduating
class will carry out their residencies in the New York metropolitan
area, with an overwhelming number remaining at NYU. The majority
will specialize in medicine, followed by 17 percent in surgery;
7 percent in pediatrics; 5 percent in obstetrics and gynecology;
6 percent in orthopedic surgery; and the remainder in other
fields such as psychiatry. "We
did extremely well. If you look at the graduating class, 80
percent of our students matched to programs at the top 50 medical
schools in the country," said Veronica Catanese, MD, Associate
Dean of Medical Education.
An annual tradition at medical schools
for the past 50 years, Match Day provides a fair, orderly
transition from medical school to residency programs. Students
interview for residencies around the nation and rank their
choices while medical schools rank their choices. The "Match" is
done by computer.#
