Arttango: A Valuable Art Program
by Dr. Pola Rosen
A unique name for a unique program, Arttango is instructive, colorful, fun, interactive and perhaps make you feel like you’re “dancing with art.” Because of budget cuts, many schools don’t have arts programs. Arttango offers a new learning environment for elementary school students.
There are 30-38 lessons and corresponding projects (one per week) which meet the Art Education National Standards. The program can be used at a computer workstation or presented to the entire class at the same time. It’s also great for personal use at home with your child. This program is for grades K through 5.
Lynda-Kay Blackburn is an art professional with over sixteen years of training. She presents the art lessons in a relaxed and clear way for everyone to follow. Among the topics covered are patterns and color, art history, looking at symbols and looking at nature.
In the sample lesson I took, I learned to make a mask using scissors, glue and colored construction paper. Blackburn gently asks, what is a mask and why would you want to wear one? She tell us that masks have been used for thousands of years and has us look at the masks of different cultures across time. She asks, tells, demonstrates and leads us to successfully make a product while building our knowledge and self-esteem.
I plan to use this program with my granddaughter Emily. I recommend it to you.#
