Harold S. Koplewicz, M.D., Receives Prestigious Award for Outstanding Contributions to Adolescent Psychiatry
Recently, at the annual conference of the American Society of Adolescent Psychiatry, Harold S. Koplewicz, M.D., received the William A. Schonfeld Award for his outstanding achievement, excellence, and dedication throughout his career in psychiatry. Adam Raff, M.D., the president of the society, presented the award.
Dr. Koplewicz is the director of the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research and founding president of The Child Study Center Foundation, a new organization dedicated to transforming mental health care for the world’s children through the integration of research, clinical practice, education, and advocacy. Dr. Koplewicz is widely recognized as an innovator in the field, a strong advocate for child mental health, and a master clinician. He founded the NYU Child Study Center in 1997 and served as its director for twelve years. Under his leadership, the NYU Child Study Center made tremendous contributions to the field through expert clinical care, a robust research portfolio, and advocacy for child mental health.
Since 1997, Dr. Koplewicz has been editor in chief of the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology. He has authored award-winning books, including It’s Nobody’s Fault: New Hope and Help for Difficult Children and their Parents; Childhood Revealed: Art Expressing Pain, Discovery & Hope; and More Than Moody: Recognizing and Treating Adolescent Depression.
The Schonfeld Award, which honors the first president of the society, has been awarded since 1969. Past recipients include Sir Michael Rutter, M.D., the former director of the Maudsley Institute and the only knighted child and adolescent psychiatrist; Selma Fraiberg, author of Ghosts in the Nursery; Erik Erikson, one of the greatest authorities on human development; Robert Coles, M.D., a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Harvard professor of psychiatry; and Bruno Bettelheim, Ph.D., author of The Empty Fortress and The Uses of Enchantment.
Dr. Koplewicz delivered the Schonfeld lecture, titled “More Than Moody: Adolescent Angst, Depression, and Suicide Risk” at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. #
