Dr. Charlotte Frank Inducted into CCNY’s Alumni Hall of Fame

Charlotte K. Frank, one of America’s leading authorities in the education field, was recently inducted into the City College Communications Alumni Hall of Fame.  Dr. Frank is a 1950 graduate of CCNY.

A Senior Vice President for Research and Development for McGraw-Hill Education, a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies, Dr. Frank helps to design and assess the print and multimedia programs used by students at every rung of the educational ladder, from pre-school to adults.  Among her key responsibilities is to research and develop, where appropriate, the educational activities of McGraw-Hill’s two other segments: The Financial Services Sector, which includes Standard and Poor’s; and the Information Services Group, which includes Business Week, Aviation Week, Engineering News-Record, and Architectural Record.  Dr. Frank also represents McGraw-Hill on the National Business Roundtable’s Educational Taskforce Initiative.

Her roots in public education run deep.  After receiving her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from CCNY, she became a New York City public school teacher and went on to become executive director of the New York City Board of Education’s Division of Curriculum and Instruction.  In that capacity she was the key decision-maker concerning what the city’s students would study.  Managing a budget of $45 million and 800 employees, she used the latest research to design and administer the students’ course of study, as well as staff professional development programs.
Dr. Frank, who holds a master’s degree from Hunter College and a Ph.D. from New York University, is a New York State Regents Emerita and is a frequent speaker at forums nationwide.  One of her key focuses has been comparing school practices with the needs students will have as members of the work force.

Dr. Frank has received more than 60 awards, including the City College Alumni Association’s 1999 Townsend Harris Medal for distinguished postgraduate achievement; the National Council of Administrative Women in Education’s Woman of the Year Award; Kappa Delta Pi’s Distinguished Educational Leadership Award; and the Doctorate Association of New York Educator’s Outstanding Educator of the Year Award.  She is a member of the Hunter College Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony of the City College Communications Alumni Group, which is part of the CCNY Alumni Association, was held at the National Arts Club, New York City.

The following CCNY alumni were inducted into the Hall of Fame with Dr. Frank: Gerald Eskenazi (Class of 1959), author and prize-winning former New York Times sportswriter; David Diaz (Class of 1965), award-winning journalist and TV newscaster who is currently Distinguished Lecturer in Media and Politics at CCNY; and Terence Samuel (Class of 1984), Director of Programming in charge of news, sports and finance for AOL Black Voices.

In addition, two CCNY alumni received posthumous induction into the Hall of Fame: Milton Himmelfarb (Class of 1938), a leading analyst and writer about American Jewish life; and Norman Jonas (Class of 1955), who was Economics Editor of Business Week.

The dinner speaker was Maury Allen (Class of 1953), author and award-winning former sportswriter for The New York Post.

The Hall of Fame Dinner also included remarks by City College President Gregory H. Williams; and a report on the new CUNY Graduate
