Match Day 2005: NYU Medical Students Capture Best Residency Appointments

Recently, fourth-year medical students from NYU School of Medicine gathered for Match Day, a nationwide event that simultaneously reveals critical residency appointments for all graduating medical students across the country. A variety of striking views captured the excitement and high drama of the 169 students concurrently opening their envelopes. At this defining moment in their professional lives, a myriad of emotions were unveiled as students learned where they will perform their residencies.

Among the graduates, 55 percent matched residencies in Internal Medicine, 5 percent in Obstetrics and Gynecology, 10.5 percent in Pediatrics, 0.5 percent in Plastic Surgery, 3 percent in Psychiatry, Surgery 7 percent, and 7 percent in Transitional.

According to Dr. Veronica Catanese, Senior Associate Dean for Education, “The most interesting finding was a decrease in the number of our students choosing to pursue training in Internal Medicine. In past years, the percentage of NYU students selecting this training path was about twice the national percentage. This year, we mirrored the national pattern for the first time; but we don’t know if it’s a trend.”

While students will pursue training in 14 states across the nation, a majority of students will remain at NYU or other schools in New York City.  Out of the 169 students, 46 percent remain in NY, with 23 of those students at NYU School of Medicine, 13 percent will go to California, including UCLA, USC, and UCSD, 5 percent will go to Massachusetts, 3 percent Connecticut, 10 percent Pennsylvania, 3 percent, Washington D.C., 2 percent, Texas, 2 percent New Jersey, and 10 percent other.

Congratulations to all the extraordinary fourth-year students!#
